If you are a Star Trek fan you will know that line. Even if you are not, you may have heard it. More likely you have heard this phrase, “What you resist, persists.”
What that means, if there is a behavior or a thought that you are resisting, it will keep coming up until you deal with it. When you resist something, you’re shying away from it, complaining about it, resenting it, protesting against it, or doing battle with it. If you don’t realize you’re resisting, then your energy and focus are spent on ignoring it or not coming to terms with it.
None of those behaviors allow you to overcome it.
If you’re ignoring something that involves old pain you are probably thinking, “Why would I want to bring that up?” It’s painful, I get it. But unfortunately, we can’t let go of something until we go through it – we have to experience it, we have to deal with it. If it’s something you’ve bottled up for years, it will eventually come out, and usually and ultimately through your health since health issues start in the mental and emotional planes.
If you’re lucky enough that it hasn’t taken a toll on your health yet, that’s an even better time to work on it before it gets to that point. It is probably coming out in other ways. It could be presenting itself through lack of motivation, self-sabotage, not accomplishing goals, depression, anxiety etc.
When you’re stuck in a defeatist attitude, anxiety, depression, fear, etc you are using up your energy to stay in that state instead of dealing with the root cause – whatever it is you are resisting. If you haven’t resolved the issue by ignoring it (because ignoring it is not productive), it’s not going to just evaporate or go away because you want it to.
If you find you’re not accomplishing the goals you want, not living the life you want, not meeting the partner you desire, then maybe it’s time to shed some light on what you’re resisting. When you can let go of what you’re resisting, then you can have the life of your dreams!
Since resistance if futile, it’s time to get it go and start living the life you desire!
