How to Avoid Regrets

While regrets may be a part of life, they don’t have to be a part of your life. Regrets are a lower vibrational energy. Part of raising your vibration is not just letting them go but not having them at all. Don’t do anything to create them.

The most sure-fire way not to make a bad decision that leads to regrets is to think before you act. Stop and pause before deciding. And obviously don’t do what might cause it. If you still want to do it, then ask yourself why.

Ask Yourself Why

Why don’t we make the “right” decision? It could be a lot of things such as fear, not thinking it through, wanting what you want despite the repercussions etc etc etc To avoid that, be mindful of your thoughts and motivation. Really check in with yourself and ask yourself why are you making that decision? Are you being impulsive? Do you just want to get it over with? Are you afraid something bad will happen if you don’t do it?

If you can see where you came from, then you can see where you’re going. Making a decision out of fear rarely works. The same can be said of impulsiveness, stubbornness etc. Once motivation is uncovered, it can be stopped dead in its tracks. Nothing good ever came out of low vibrational decisions.

Once motivation is realized, then it can be counteracted with the proper strategy. If it’s impulsiveness, realize it then back off for a while. Make no moves until you’ve really thought it through.

If it’s fear, question if the fear is valid. Oftentimes it’s not but sometimes it can be. If you’re afraid that you’ll lose a bid on a house if you don’t act quickly, you could be right. Access the situation. Is it a popular home in a popular neighborhood? Are there a lot of other lookers? If everything is pointing to put in a bid now, then do it as long as you feel comfortable that this is the right home for you.

Making the “right” decision cancels regrets because there’s nothing to regret. So really examine your motivation before taking action.

Part of motivation is your story around it. What will be gained if you make that decision? “He’ll really like me if I do this.” That’s your story. There’s no way to know if he’ll really like you. So is it really the right thing for you to do? Don’t attach to, “If I do this, then he’ll do that” because you don’t know that it will play out that way.

Stand Back a Bit

Stand back and be objective when evaluating your motivation and story to see the situation clearly. If you’re not objective, then you’re too attached. Being too attached often leads us down the wrong road because we tend to make emotional decisions, not fact-based ones. Objectivity removes that.

Don’t act out of emotions. Emotions are great, but sometimes they “lie” to us. They can cause us to feel something that isn’t there or clouds our judgement. Calm down or get some clarity before choosing. Don’t act out of anger or any other strong emotion. That’s a recipe for disaster. Give yourself a pause first to sort things out.

Know yourself. If you’re not feeling well today, then it’s probably not a good day to make a decision or take on an endeavor. From experience I’ve learned do not attempt any crafts when I don’t feel good. I’ve done it before, and I always regret the outcome. I can’t think clearly, and my creativity goes down when I don’t feel well. The same can be said for writing this blog. If I don’t feel well when writing I know the result won’t be great. That’s when I walk away. Save it for another day.

If you know you tend to be impulsive, don’t decide right away. Sit on your decision for a few days or talk it out with a more level-headed person. If you don’t make good decisions under pressure, then take the pressure off. What can you do to alleviate the pressure?

Get the facts. If you’re not very informed about a decision you need to make, then get help. That’s part of knowing your limitations. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. That’s what Google and friends are for! If you don’t have all the information and facts, then you may make the wrong decision and regret it.

Appreciate what you have. That way you won’t get stuck on what you don’t have. If one of your regrets is that you didn’t pick out enough things when your grandma passed, appreciate what you did get instead. Focus on what you have, not what you don’t have. Focus on what’s there, not what’s missing. That will not only help you let go of any existing regret but prevent regrets from stacking up in the future.

The Most Important Thing

Listen to your intuition. It will always guide you correctly and never steers you wrong! It is your internal GPS so use it. It is our most overlooked tool, yet the most important one.

The night before my mom passed, I had the urge to call her. I had to call several times to finally get her on the phone, but I persisted. Most of my family was planning on calling her the next day, a holiday, to wish her well. Something kept telling me to call her tonight. And I’m glad I did because she passed the next morning before anyone could talk to her. I was the last person to speak to her that night. That brings me comfort.

Because I listened to my intuition, I have no regrets about not getting to talk to her one last time. While the phone call was brief, it didn’t matter. All I wanted was to hear her voice and tell her that I love her and am thinking about her. Mission accomplished. That’s one “un-regret” that I can thank my intuition for. But believe me, I have a list of others that I work to whittle down.

Hindsight is 20/20 as we know. Intuition is a hack to avoid past mistakes. Why learn from them after the fact when you can prevent them altogether? It gives you that leg up from everyone else because it provides access to information that others don’t know to tap into. When people see you making good decisions you can smile and know that you’re using your superpower! You have the home team advantage! Just remember to use it!
