What makes sense isn’t always what your heart wants to do.
Recently I did a reading for a young lady. She was at a crossroads in her life. She was considering moving to New York to enroll in a program to become a teacher. Prior to that someone turned her onto acting and she enjoyed it. As a result, she has been considering getting into acting. Since New York has plenty of opportunities for that she considered getting her teaching certificate while taking acting lessons at night.
While teaching sounded good on paper because it would allow her to move to New York, have a job and a steady paycheck, she’s not really interested in it. The more we talked about it, the less she liked the idea of being a teacher. Just saying it out loud filled her with dread.
The sensible thing to do would be to take the teaching job and power through it just to have a steady paycheck. But that’s not what her heart wants.
It’d be responsible to have the job in hand when going to New York. Not wait until she gets there to find a job or get a cliché waitress job while taking acting lessons. Smart people make sure they have money coming in. They have the job lined up. They have some money in the bank. We’re labelled irresponsible, and perhaps rightly so, if we don’t.
Think Outside the Box
That’s not to say this young lady couldn’t find another job that fulfills her while she explores acting. Or live somewhere cheaper to afford the rent while she pursues her dream. There’s still a way to make it work even if it’s not the most practical solution. When we really want something, sometimes we have to think outside the box to get it.
Pursuing our dream isn’t always easy or practical so some creative thinking will often guide us to the solution. On paper it doesn’t make sense to quit your day job before you have a new job, but as I said, sometimes what makes sense isn’t what we want to do. That’s when you find the alternative solution, the work around.
The days of a corporate job for life ended over a decade ago. These days, especially younger people are seeing the value in having multiple jobs or finding ways to generate passive income to supplement their day job.
Multiple Income Streams and Other Creative Ideas
That’s called not putting all of your eggs in one basket. Back when I was growing up that’s what we did. Companies took care of their employees. You worked for a company for life. That loyalty is gone now. The workplace landscape is very different. So, we must adjust. And that’s what many millennials and younger people are doing.
Thankfully remote working is now a thing and more work from home businesses are sprouting up. It’s doable to cobble together a living with a few jobs without working all the time and feeling worn out. Passive income is also a thing. A huge blessing, really. Who wouldn’t love to make money while you sleep?
With all these opportunities it’s even easier to pursue dreams. We don’t have to be tied to our office job. We don’t have to feel like we can never quit. It just requires some creative thinking and listening to your heart, your gut. This doesn’t just apply to work, but any aspect of your life.
To Get Answers, Ask Yourself…
Next time you feel trapped in your situation whatever it is – work or personal – ask yourself what do you really want? Be honest. Ask these open-ended popular questions:
- “If I could do anything I wanted, what would it be?”
- “If money wasn’t an issue, what job would I have? or Where would I live?”
- “If I could have any type of relationship, am I happy with the one that I have?”
When you ask yourself those questions and remove the filter of practicality, you can finally get to the real answers. The ones that your heart wants.
When I decided to become a psychic, I knew it’s what I wanted to do. Thankfully I’m not the breadwinner in my family so I didn’t have to worry about providing on a psychic’s income. While I had a business at the time, I knew it wouldn’t be forever. At that point I had no real exit plan for my business, I just knew that I wanted to be a psychic. It’s what my heart wanted above all else. So, I pursued it.
Being a psychic hardly pays the bills but it’s what I wanted to do. I was following my heart. The sensible thing to do would’ve been to pick something that generates more income. But it’s what I wanted. If I still want to make more money, I’ll figure it out. I’ll find a way. The point is I listened to my heart, and I totally love being a psychic! It gratifies me beyond belief.
Although we’re emotional beings many of us shut that side of us down. It’s natural for us to want to follow our heart but our practical or fearful side stops us. While our practical side can be our voice of reason, we also need to be happy. Use your practicality to put the brakes on foolish ideas but find a way to make your dreams come true. Just remember, there’s a fine line between foolish and creative so be wary when making that distinction.
Get What You Want AND Need
As the Rolling Stones said, “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try, sometimes, Well, you might find, You get what you need.” For the sake of this blog post, I respectfully disagree. You can get what you want if you’re willing to put in the effort. And it can be both what you want and need if you put in some creative thought. You know the saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Go back to your childhood. Wasn’t there a time when you really wanted something and found a way to get it? Maybe it was doing extra chores to get candy money. Or making a deal with mom to go somewhere. You made it happen. You found a way. You can do that again. The stakes are higher, but you still have the skills.
The bottom line is pay attention to what makes you happy, what makes your heart sing. It may not be the sensible or practical thing to do, but if it makes you happy, then find a way to fill in the gaps. Find a way to make more money. Find a way to live in your paradise. Find a way to satisfy your wants and needs.
For those who aren’t risk takers, it’s a riskier move to do what you want, not what makes more sense. What you want can make sense if you find a way to make it work while satisfying your needs like paying the bills. And you can. Get creative!
