We often ask what am I “meant” to do here? What am I “supposed” to be doing?
Many of us feel an urge or a calling that we’re “supposed” to be doing something, but we don’t know what. When we ask that, we’re seeking a life purpose. What did I come here to do? What is my purpose?
What do You Like to Do?
Instead of asking what am I “supposed” to be doing, the better question is, “What do you like to do?” We all have unique gifts and talents. We’re better at some things than others. We prefer to do some things over other things. We like some things better than others. Those are your nuggets – what do you prefer to do? What do you like to do?
If you’re not sure what you’re good at or what your talents, skills and gifts are you can take online quizzes to find out. You can visit a career counselor. You can read books on the subject.
My solution is not any of those but asking your inner knowing, your inner self. Ask yourself: if you could do anything, what would it be? If time or money were not an issue, what would you be doing? That’s a great place to start because it allows you to answer from your desires, from your heart. That’s where the real answer lies. Not in, “Well, if I could get a better job, I’d be happier.” We’re not talking about a better job, we’re talking about your life purpose.
A Purpose Doesn’t Have to be a Career
Sometimes a life purpose doesn’t have to be a career. It can be extra-curricular. Unfortunately, we need money to live. I say unfortunately because we’re all slaves to the almighty paycheck. Even if you’re retired or well-off, you had to get a paycheck at some point to get to where you are now.
Maybe you need to keep your day job to pay the bills, but you really want to work with underprivileged children. I don’t know too many well-paying jobs in that arena so we’re talking volunteer work. Who has time to volunteer, you ask? If it’s your calling, your heart’s desire, what you really want to do, you’ll make time for it. Why? Because it fulfills you.
Maybe you’re one of the “lucky ones” whose heart’s desire lines up with an income. You find your “dream” job or build a business that addresses your “calling.” I say “lucky” one because most of us still need to work to support ourselves so what better way to bring in the paycheck than with something you enjoy?
It’s Your Passion
Boiled down to a single point, our life purpose is doing what we enjoy. It’s discovering our passion. It’s doing what we’re good at. Yes, you can delve into the Akashic records to find out, but really, it’s as simple as asking the question, “What’s my passion?”
I can read the Akashic records but I’ve also had Akashic record readings done for me just to see what they had to say. Not a single person, and some of these readers are very good mind you, told me (a) nothing I didn’t already know and (b) nothing very detailed. Not a one of them came out and said “you’re supposed to be doing ‘x’” as in specifics. Rather, they all reverted to my strengths, my heart’s desire. Some even asked me first what I wanted to be doing or what I was good at, then told me what they saw – which was one and the same.
I rest my case.
We Want to Help Others
Here’s another caveat. As humans, we naturally want to help one another. When we start to awaken is when we really start asking the questions: “Why am I here?” “What am I ‘supposed’ to be doing?” “What’s my life purpose?”
Then we get the urge to help others.
Let me let you in on a not-so-secret secret. As I said above, as humans, we naturally want to help others. As part of awakening we begin to open our hearts and see the world as connected, hence the desire to help others.
Many, many, many people I do readings for as part of awakening tell me just that: “I want to help others.” They instantly think they should quit their day job and become a coach, a psychic, a counselor, etc. That’s all well and good and I’d never discourage anyone from doing any of those things. But, here’s the thing, we can help others in many, many different ways.
The Two Can Intersect
Why can’t your passion and your desire to help others intersect?
Maybe your “calling” is to make beautiful art that speaks to other’s souls. It awakens them, enlivens them, opens them up to beauty. To me, that’s beautiful in and of itself. Where would be without the likes of Monet, Manet, DaVinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Picasso etc.? In a drab world, IMO.
Making art can be a career or a hobby. It matters not as long as you are happy and you see how others enjoy it. That’s your passion at work.
If you love music maybe your calling is to make music. We don’t all have to be a famous rock or pop star to touch the souls of others. Maybe you can teach music or teach music to disabled children. It takes a very special person, IMO, to teach children, let alone special needs children. That’s not a low calling, IMO, but a “higher” calling.
If you’re good with numbers you’re helping people by being an accountant, financial advisor or day trader. We’re not all good in those areas, so if you are, you are helping people. Maybe to satisfy your need to help others you do some pro-bono (free) work in your off-hours.
The point is, we don’t all have to be a coach, counselor, therapist, psychic, healer, etc. to help people. Again, I’m not discouraging anyone from those callings, I’m just saying many people assume helping people translates to one of those professions. It may or may not have to. It depends on what you really love and your skill set.
If you don’t really like talking to people, if you’re not really that good at seeing people’s problems, if you don’t have the interest or the know-how to run your own business, then maybe you’re not cut out for one of the above professions. That’s ok, because again, we all have our strengths.
If Not Your Passion, Start with Your Strengths
You can still find a way to help people. Don’t overlook your strengths.
When I first started my kids-oriented business 17 years ago I didn’t know what my strengths were. Through intuition I found out I was very good at organizing information. I knew I was a good writer having won awards in school. As further proof I was asked to write for the school newspaper and later as an adult I worked as a free-lance journalist for a while. Writing is one thing, organizing and gathering information is another. Just because you’re good at one doesn’t make you good at the other. It can mean that, but not necessarily. In my case, I was good at both, but I didn’t know that. That business allowed me to be successful in a way I had not been before.
That business served a purpose on many levels, one being it allowed me to see a strength I did not know I had. It was also a stepping stone to my current occupation which includes writing. I write to you every week, do I not? Yes. And I love it. I hope my passion shines through to you as I write.
Going back to my previous Akashic record readings, they all concluded with me being a writer. Ever since I was a child in school winning writing awards, I knew this was my passion. It may have gotten covered up for a while, especially in the need for a paycheck, but now I know this is my direction. My talent is my purpose. Through writing I educate people. Educating people is a form of helping.
You can do the same.
Ask yourself what you really love, what you enjoy, what’s your passion.
THAT, my friends, is your life purpose. Yes, it’s really that simple. Because anytime you are doing what you love, you raise your vibration. And any time you raise your vibration, you influence others to do the same. Thus, you are helping them.
What do you love? Ask yourself that question and you will find your answer.
